Heard the year after I was born

Comments made in the year 1955:

'I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it's going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for $20.00.'

'Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long before $2,000.00 will only buy a used one.'

'If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous.'

'Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?'

'If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.'

'When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon? Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.'

'I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying DAMN in GONE WITH THE WIND, it seems every new movie has either HELL or DAMN in it.'

'I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas.'

'Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday they'll be making more than the President.'

'I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.'

'It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.'

'It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.'

'I'm afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.'

'Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to congress.'

'The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.'

'There is no sense going to Lincoln or Omaha anymore for a weekend, it costs nearly $15.00 a night to stay in a hotel.'

'No one can afford to be sick anymore, at $35.00 a day in the hospital it's too rich for my blood.'

'If they think I'll pay 50 cents for a haircut, forget it.'

I remember hearing about Bomb Shelters, and wondering why we didn't have one. I also remember living in Florida for 31 years and every time hurricane season rolled around I wished I had one. Then I remembered... the water table doesn't even allow basements in most areas. I also remember when MotherDear and Dad first took us to McDonald's for the very first time the Big Macs had just come out. We couldn't afford to get one. We had to order a hamburger or cheeseburger or do without.

BTW, when I got my driver's license (about 1970ish) and filled up my first tank of gas - the gas was $.32 a gallon. It cost me almost $5.00 to fill the tank! OMG!

Yup. Old. I Am. Deal with it! Enjoy the today's trip around the sun!

Those prices sound great now, but remember, salaries ranged between $40 and $50 a week for a good job. Don't think I want to go back to those times.

What a neat post and such memories.
We complain today and most really have no idea about what things were like before.

I think back to the later fifties when in elementary school and the sirens going off for air raid drills....holding our heads while hiding under our desks, the teacher closed the shades.....why didn't that terrify us? Guess it's because we had a really great time growing up. Mom's were home.....loved the smell of sunshine and fresh air on the laundry drying from the umbrella clothes tree.... Tried that raising my kids to save money but all I could smell was stinky air from the oil chimneys and bugs were always all over my wash. :( =^Y^=Holly

And I remember when we were teenagers and we'd each chip in a quarter for gas. And it filled the whole tank!

Enjoyed this post.

Is it your birthday? If so, Happy Birthday!

My dad still has his bomb shelter with the canned goods and bottled water and the blankets and such. Never quite shook it off.

Thanks for the perspective from the past. That was fun. Maybe I will challenge myself to live on $20 worth of food next week! (And lose a few pounds.)

I can remember that there was a place here called Burger Chef that was the equivalent of a McDonald's that had a sign with the smiling chef holding a sign proclaiming the burgers to be 15 cents. That was probably in the mid to late 60's or maybe early 70's. Can you even imagine? And wasn't there a commercial for McDonald's where the guy ordered a Big Mac, fries, and Coke and got change back from his $2? I think that was it but then again MY old memory is pretty faulty these days!
