My World Tuesday - Historic Savannah, GA

Savannah, Georgia's First City, sits on the banks of the Savannah River. This is a statue of Florence Martus, known as the Waving Girl. She welcomed ships coming into Savannah's port for more than 40 years.

As their web site will tell you "We're more friendly than formal here in Savannah. Whoever you are, wherever you're from, we'll welcome you with true Southern hospitality, just as we've been welcoming guests since 1733. Hip and historic, robust and refined, Savannah is where you'll find amazing architecture, spooky cemeteries and rich history—along with global sophistication, funky nightlife and fabulous food."

And how! Savannah is one of my favorite cities! Savannah has 21 Squares, some of the most gorgeous common areas gracefully lined with Live Oak trees. For instance, Chippewa Square was made famous by the movie "Forrest Gump". You know that bench he sat on while waiting for the bus as he told his story? It's in Chippewa Square!

One of the Oak-lined Squares

If it is your first time, I recommend jumping on board one of the Trolley Tours to get an idea of the places you'd really like to explore. There are more than 50 tour companies to choose from!

The Mercer House

You may also choose a romantic Horse-drawn Carriage Tour!

Carriage Tour

There are many grand mansions, Bed & Breakfasts and Inns, haunted cemeteries, cobblestone streets, 8 styles of architecture, glorious park fountains, wonderful ironworks, grand churches of every faith, Factor's Walk, City Market, Telfair Museum of Arts and Science (the oldest museum in the south!), Historic River Street, and a bounty of antiques shops and boutiques, and dining of every kind!

Did I mention the fabulous Squares and magnificent Live Oak trees?

If you can't find something to love about Savannah, it's sure not their fault!

Love all shots! Interesting and scenic! But I think my favourite must be the one of the Waving Girl! A very different piece of sculpture!

I knew nothing of this area until today. How beautiful it looks.

Seems like I read that about Forrest Gump. Weren't the scenes of him and his boat also filmed near there somewhere?

In all the times I've been to and through Georgia, I don't believe I've ever made it to Savannah... I should rectify that!

I wanted to try hoptouring/sightseeing...Savannah is surely a perfect place to go but I'd enjoy walking in a clean and friendly neighborhood as yours.

Awesome place! It looks like St.Augustine, Florida. It seems like an old Spanish city, Europe.
Have a good vote for your elections.

Thanks for the tour - I love taking carriage rides to see the city. I'd also like to take one of those live oaks home with me. They're beautiful.

Savannah is a gorgeous city and I just love it. As you wrote, the squares are beautiful and just make walking around so pleasurable. I love the Riverwalk with its cobblestones. As a Georgia girl far from home, it makes me wanna hop a plane and drop in again. Thanks for the photos :)

Hi Barb (Will) -- I was just checking to see if I had been missing you (except on Sunday) with Ruby Tuesday, Wordless Wednesday, or Skywatch. You aren't doing any of those any more it seems. I was glad to see you read Fred's blog.

I have not been to Savanah but it is on our list of places to go. Mrs. Jim has relatives in Georgia that we need to go see.

Our neighbor lady (Mrs. Roger) is from there originally.

I'm glad you read Fred's blog, too. :)

Nice pictures - Savannah is a charming city that is so unlike most U.S. cities. I was there for a week attending a seminar and had the fortune to be able to sample some of the scenery and fine food. Too bad I wasn't blogging back then.

I live in Savannah cause of my husband. I'm not so fond of the place actually. I tell my husband the air perpetually smells like frog farts (the marsh). The first time I went to River Street I twisted my ankle on the cobblestone. Of course, my dislike of the city may revolve around the fact that my neighbor shot his wife in my front yard. -shudder-
